Centella Sheet Masks to Calm Skin

I tried three calming masks with centella asiatica extract to see how well they would calm my reactive skin. Centella asiatica extract is a very soothing ingredient with anti-inflammatory benefits, so it’s in a lot of calming Korean products. You might see products called “cica”, which also refers to centella asiatica extract.

Beauty of Joseon Centella Asiatica Calming Sheet Mask

Packaging

I should say this was my first proper sheet mask and I forgot they sometimes have a piece of backing material to help you apply the mask, plus I’m a clumsy oaf. So I got a bit confused about how to put it on – pro tip: remember it has a backing piece!

Fitting

It left something to be desired, I think my nose is a bit big but also I misapplied it because I’d already removed the backing piece, so I had to reposition it quite a bit. User error mostly.

Essence

The liquid is gorgeous thin watery gel and it’s very soothing. There’s enough in the packet to do your neck, chest and arms – I highly recommend slathering it on those areas too. Even without the sheet mask material on my neck, it took a good 15 minutes to dry and felt lovely.

Centella asiatica extract is the star of the show, with 15% included in this sheet mask – but there’s also niacinamide for brightening plus soothing ingredients. There are traditional Korean extracts in the mask, such as you would expect from Beauty of Joseon, including mugwort, pursulane, ginseng and green tea, alongside multiple sizes of hyaluronic acid, which is a nice bonus and you can read different sizes here.

Longevity

In the end, I forgot I was wearing the mask, despite the fit issues, so I was probably wearing it for about 30-40 minutes. This is longer than the recommended time (15-20 minutes) but I’ve read plenty of experiences where people just wear them until they are just about to dry out – if it’s a mask that is primarily focused on hydration and soothing. I wouldn’t do this with an active like vitamin c, for example.

Final Word

My skin felt very hydrated, soothed and calmed. I am happy with the results and have ordered it again, in the hope that I do a better job with the fit next time!

Pyunkang Yul Calming Mask Pack

Packaging

Where’s the backing?! After my last experience, I was preparing myself to use it to help position the mask but no backing one for this one. However, it wasn’t too difficult to unfold or apply.

Fitting

It felt better than the Beauty of Joseon but I didn’t really do a much better job of applying it. I suspect I’ll always find it a bit tricky as I’m not very good with fine detail tasks, unless it’s eyeliner: and even then I tend to end up doing a slightly thicker line than intended!

Essence

Not as thick as the Beauty of Joseon in my opinion: still a thin gel-like liquid but a touch more watery – consequently it feels a little more hydrating, a little less moisturising. It feels lovely and smooth on my skin. Maybe there’s a touch less in the packet than the Beauty of Joseon, but I decided to layer it over the mask material as well this time so it’s probably about the same.

Key ingredients are bamboo extract, multiple sizes of hyaluronic acid, Japanese honeysuckle extract, centella asiatica extract and ceramide NP, as well as a little oil and other soothing ingredients.

Longevity

Ooh, not as long lasting as the Beauty of Joseon and I found the bit between my mouth and nose lifted off, so I had a flappy bit of dry mask material there.

However, it lasted 25 minutes without too many issues, which is still reasonable, as the recommended time is 10-20 minutes.

Final Word

My skin looked and felt calmer, as well as hydrated and moisturised. To be fair to the Beauty of Joseon mask, I didn’t check in the mirror after I did the mask but I can say for sure that the Pyunkang Yul really calmed my skin.

Heimish Cica Live Ampoule Sheet Mask

Packaging

No backing and a bit more difficult to unfold than the Pyunkang Yul – the essence was dripping off the Heimish as I was trying to unfold it, causing me some grip issues.

I also struggled to open the actual packet – scissors were required. Sure, my fingers were a bit oily from my neck routine but I think if you have any kind of mobility issues with your hands, you might want to think twice about this one.

Fitting

If you have a narrow face, you’ll be absolutely fine. For me, it is probably the worst of the three but my face is quite wide so my experience may not be your experience!

I found the outer edge eye holes were pretty much in my eyes and even then, the part of the mask for the edges of my nose was lifted off my skin, suggesting that it’s much too narrow for my face.

The mouth hole placement wasn’t quite right for me, either, the upper lip part kept moving down to cover my top lip. Thankfully the essence didn’t taste bad…

So I guess my face is wide but also short? Round faces might want to avoid this one, unless you don’t mind a bit of movement whilst it’s on.

Essence

There’s a little fragrance in this mask and my neck is quite sensitive so I didn’t slather my neck in it. I used some of the extra essence in the mask packet on top of the mask. It did drip a few times but I don’t think a couple of drops were irritating for my neck.

This is the most moisturising mask essence of the three, even though it was perhaps an even thinner consistency than the others, and the moisturising feel is probably down to the shea butter (which I didn’t spot on the ingredient list – more on this later).

It has a really nice set of ingredients: centella asiatica is high up on the ingredient list, along with panthenol for additional soothing, lots of nice plant extracts and ferment, as well as hyaluronic acid and ceramide NP.

Longevity

The mask was still very wet when I took it off after 15-20 – I couldn’t keep it on much longer because of how the mask material was rubbing my eyelids.

Final Word

It was definitely calming for my skin, if not an entirely calming experience!

I don’t usually choose products that have shea butter in, as I suspect it causes closed comedones for me, so I will be more careful with ingredient lists in future. But it was super moisturising and if you’re OK with shea butter and have a narrow face, this is a great choice.

Oh and don’t use Cosrx 96 after you’ve used the mask – it took 30 minutes to dry. But on the upside, my skin was so moisturised that I could get away with a very light moisturiser today!

Winner

Pyunkang Yul Calming Mask – it fit the best, my skin was the most calm afterwards and it worked well with the rest of my routine.
