K-Beauty: Essential Tips for Day & Night

There is a big difference between applying skincare in the morning versus at night. In this article, we will explore the reasons why.

Even here at UNBLEMISH, we can agree that Skincare can be time-consuming and can be expensive, so some people may feel that just the fact they put something on their face at some point during the day is more than good enough.

And it’s true; some semblance of skincare is better than none at all! We applaud any effort at UNBLEMISH.

However, with a little research and guidance, one can maximise the benefits of their hard-earned skincare products and see the world of difference just because of how and when it is applied. Today we’re focusing on the when.

A Short Anecdote

When my mother in law mentioned to me that the eye serum I had given her was making her eyelids dry, my heart sank. It is one of the bestsellers and most beloved / raved about k-beauty eye serums there is (if you’re curious it’s this one here from Beauty of Joseon).

However, somewhere along the lines we got lost in translation about the importance of when to apply this particular eye serum. You see, this serum contains retinol. For those of you who don’t know retinol should be used at night and not during the day because it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, can be destabilized by light, and may cause skin irritation and dryness.

Using retinol at night can minimize the risk of sun damage, ensure the product remains effective, and prevent skin irritation and dryness.

To my dismay, I learned she had been applying it whenever she remembered, which was mostly when she woke-up, and living in a hot, sunny climate did her no favours.

This got me to thinking about how important it is to emphasise the benefits of when we apply our skincare!

Protection vs Repair

One of the main differences between skincare in the morning and at night is the focus on protection versus repair.

While protection and repair are both important for maintaining healthy skin, they serve different purposes. Protection helps to prevent damage before it occurs, while repair helps to reverse damage that has already happened.

Protection refers to the use of products or practices that help prevent damage to the skin from external factors, such as UV radiation (not limited to sunny days remember! Cloudy days can be just as bad!), pollution, and other environmental stressors (pollen, dust, car fumes etc).

Repair, on the other hand, is all about restoring and healing skin after damage happens. Repair can include the use of products that stimulate collagen production, such as retinoids, or the use of exfoliants to remove damaged skin cells.

Ideally, and something we really get behind at UNBLEMISH, is that a comprehensive routine should include both protective and reparative elements. This can help to prevent damage from occurring in the first place, while also helping to restore the skin’s natural balance and promote healthy, radiant-looking skin.

A Little Bit More About Skin Regeneration

The body’s natural cell regeneration process is at its peak during night-time. This means that the skin is better able to absorb and utilize the beneficial ingredients in skincare products to repair and rejuvenate itself.

At night, the skin’s natural repair mechanisms kick into high gear, and new skin cells are produced to replace old and damaged ones. The skin also loses more moisture at night, which means that it can better absorb hydrating ingredients from skincare products.

Using products that promote cell turnover and repair at night can help support the skin’s natural regeneration process. By being smart about our skincare, we can greatly reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

Without further ado, here’s our top UNBLEMISH tips for day & night skincare:

UNBLEMISH’s K-Beauty AM Skincare Tips

  1. Sunscreen: Korean skincare routines typically include a high-quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Sunscreen helps protect the skin from harmful UV radiation that can cause premature aging and other damage.
  2. Vitamin C serum: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by UV radiation and pollution.
  3. Lightweight moisturizer: A lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer can help protect the skin’s natural barrier and prevent moisture loss during the day. Our lightweight moisturisers at UNBLEMISH can be found under the category ‘Lotions’.
  4. Cushion foundation: Cushion foundation is a popular Korean makeup product that provides lightweight coverage often also providing SPF protection.
  5. Facial mists: Facial mists can help hydrate the skin and provide a refreshing burst of protection throughout the day.
  6. Eye cream: The delicate skin around the eyes is particularly susceptible to damage from UV radiation and pollution. Korean skincare often includes an eye cream with SPF protection to help prevent damage.

UNBLEMISH’s K-Beauty PM Skincare Tips

  1. Double cleansing: Korean skincare typically includes a two-step cleansing process to remove makeup, dirt, and impurities. The first step is an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser to thoroughly cleanse the skin.
  2. Exfoliating products: Exfoliating products can help remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. This can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall skin texture. Our excellent blog writer at UNBLEMISH Kate goes into detail about the different types of exfoliation k-beauty has to offer.
  3. Retinol/Retinoid: Korean skincare often includes a retinol or retinoid product to stimulate collagen production, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture.
  4. Essence: An essence is a lightweight, hydrating product that is applied after cleansing and helps prepare the skin for the next steps of the skincare routine. Essences can also help improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and boost radiance by adding that extra layer of hydration.
  5. Sleeping masks: Overnight masks are designed to be left on the skin overnight and can help nourish and repair the skin while you sleep. These masks often contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, or niacinamide to provide deep hydration and promote skin repair.
