Read on for some commonly asked K-Beauty moisturiser questions answered.

What are K-Beauty moisturisers and is it any better than other creams?

Korean skin care focuses on protection using hydrating properties, moisturising ingredients and SPF etc., to protect and maintain the skin. The western approach is focused mainly on treating and undoing the damage that’s already affected the skin. However we know that once the damage is done, it is hard to recover the skin to its original state. The adage ‘prevention over cure’ is the heart of K-Beauty skincare and, naturally, their moisturisers as well.

Based on tradition, K-Beauty moisterisers only use natural and harsh-free ingredients to create the clear, glowy, and natural-looking skin. The research, time and effort to create these products have been through multiple generations which has made it globally popular.

Korean consumers are demanding when it comes to their skincare products, which has led to K-beauty companies being among the most innovative in the industry. They don’t shy away from trying new ingredients and incorporating new technology to ensure their products are the best available.

In fact, many types of skincare that we now use regularly in western society were introduced by K-beauty companies, including cushion compacts, sheet masks, and color-correcting creams.

Which k-beauty moisteriser do I need?

Dry Skin: If you struggle with dry and dehydrated skin, you might need a hydrating moisturiser that goes deeper than deep to treat dryness effectively.

Using products that are heavy in hydrating ingredients is your key to success in this step of your routine. The consistency plays a big part too, as heavier formulas can be your best friend for excellent barrier-restoring results.

Here at UNBLEMISH we harp on about how much we love Green Tea as an actively soothing and hydrating ingredient in skincare. We love rice, hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, cherry blossom, centella, propolis, aloe, kombucha… the list goes on. As mentioned, K-Beauty innovation is the best in the world and the ingredients above are used to their max benefit.

If in doubt, look at the ingredients of your chosen cream and see the top listed. Find a cream with a high concentration of a hydrating ingredient by using our drop down selection menu for ‘Dry Skin’.

Oily / Acne Prone: Many people who have oily skin (and acne prone skin) tend to avoid using moisturizers as most moisturizers are not made for this skin type and they tend to make the skin even oilier or greasier.

But don’t skip out on this essential and super useful step! If you have oily skin or oily acne prone skin, you really want to find a good moisturiser that suits your skin type and wouldn’t make it even oilier. Luckily there are very good moisturisers specially made for this skin type, like this one from Pyunkang Yul and this one from COSRX.

Combination: When you have combination skin you usually feature two or more skin types. Your skin could be dry and flaky in some places and have excess oil in other areas. You may be surprised to know that combination skin is the most common skin type but people with combo skin usually mistaken their skin type to be oily. Usually the t-zone, forehead, nose and chin are likely to get shiny throughout the day, due to overactive glands, rather than your cheeks. The best creams available include the AXIS-Y My Heart Duo and the balancing gel from Pyunkang Yul.

Anti-Ageing: Just as the K-Beauty approach to acne is completely different, fine lines and wrinkles have their own course of action that is uniquely Korean. K-Beauty moisterisers are all about creating a healthy environment for your skin before it shows signs of ageing, by keeping an optimal state of hydration and balanced oils. By doing this, your skin will be an environment to heal itself, and so signs of ageing can be reversed and delayed. Using bolstering ingredients which quicken cell-turnover and boost collagen include this collagen packed beauty from ETUDE HOUSE and this custard like creamy dream from MARY & MAY (which we have a rocking review about from Kate Limond here).

How often should I apply k-beauty moisturisers?

You should moisturise your face every day, every morning and evening. Moisturising is a perfect way to nourish and protect your skin before you start your day and before you go to sleep. Moisturising will hydrate, brighten, smooth, and plump the look of your skin with instant and long-term results. Think of the morning moisturiser as the ‘instant’ effect, and the night-time routine as the ‘long-term’ investment.

It’s important to moisturise your face every morning because your day moisturiser is designed to hydrate your skin after cleansing and prepare your skin for the day ahead, whether you’ll be applying makeup or going for a fresh-faced, natural-looking glow. It is protect your skin from free radicals and pollutants, while feeding your skin throughout the day.

You should also moisturise your skin every night, but for different reasons. After a full day of your skin being exposed to elements of day-to-day life, moisturising your skin in the evening will allow your skin to reap the benefits of the nourishing and moisturising ingredients in your night cream, while your skin is at it’s busiest reparative time.

How do I apply K-Beauty moisturisers?

Moisturisers are most effective if you use them while your skin is still damp because damp skin absorbs the product more readily. That also gives the moisturiser the chance to lock in that hydration. A gentle patting motion helps push k-beauty moisturisers deeper into the skin rather than rubbing it on the surface. It makes sense to spend a couple of minutes dabbing your face with creams rather than hastily rubbing it and getting done in a couple of fleeting seconds. At the end of the day (ha, literally), you can’t go wrong with K-Beauty moisturisers. If you skip everything else, make sure you don’t skip this step and your skin will thank you.
